Shadows Fall – Fire From The Sky – Review

Since first covering music back in the early 2000′s, I quickly acknowledged the popularity and longevity of the American Metal genre. Veteran artists like Killswitch Engage, Lamb of God, and Shadows Fall had captivated audiences, while not really changing (or needing to change) their musical formula all that much over the years. After seven acclaimed full-lengths, Grammy-nominated (crazy I know), Springfield, MA five-piece Shadows Fall has settled down with a favorite of ours, producer/writer/guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz (Killswitch Engage, Times Of Grace, The Devil Wears Prada) to record their latest album “Fire From The Sky.” News of their current record hearkened me back to their 1997 debut effort “Somber Eyes To The Sky,” not just because it featured the same producer and sequential title, but rather just how far the band had come and progressed without alienating fans from constant evolution or becoming bland due to repetitive, samey albums. read more

Adestria – Chapters – Review

As far as obscure metalcore bands go, the SoCo five-piece hardcore/punk/heavy metal/slash/ slash/ slash band Adestria (silly Greek goddess name and all) have accomplished quite a lot. The band set out with their 2010 EP “Oh The Places You’ll Go,” they received positive recognition in AltPress (hard to do if you aren’t a hipster) and even started the courtship with the growing label, Razor & Tie Records. Due to the flood of modern metalcore acts though, it’s always a challenge for even the most talented artists to make it out of the first few years. But thanks to members that are teaming with ambition and rabid technical ability, Adestria have already made it past that most important step, their first full-length “Chapters.read more

Hit The Lights – Invicta – Review

Of all the pop punk bands in recent memory, there hasn’t been one that acted as the perfect guilty pleasure as much as Hit The Lights did in 2006. The sugar-dosed melodic guitars and dance-inducing tunes of “This Is A Stickup…Don’t Make It A Murder” were an instant classic — even influencing the name of our website. Since then this five-piece from Limo, Ohio have been steadily releasing new EPs and full-lengths with a renewed tenacity, case in point was 2008′s “Skip School Start Fights,” which while exerting a much more poppy sound, still kept the bands punk spirit alive, with catchy riffs and angsty, yet potent, lyrics like “Stay Out“‘s, “Stay out all night, ’Cause rest is for the dead. So we won’t stop, no we won’t stop. Raise your glass high.” Since then, Hit The Lights has not only majorly changed the tone with their latest effort “Invicta,” they have also changed their album art style.
