Back in 2007 when a Myspace bulletin from Tarcy Thomason went out pleading for new members to join his Texas pop punk band, four others answered. After forming a semi-generic, yet appealing sound, and stepping into a bit of luck — Artist Vs. Poet was signed to the indie-famous label, Fearless Records. What followed was a set of EPs, that paved the way for their newest recording, their debut full-length “Favorite Fix.” Artist Vs. Poet fits the Fearless signing pattern of energetic poppy rock bands with loads of personality. It’s probably the only time when it’s alright to be like everyone else. Who says good things don’t come from young projects? Well apparently not The Bigger Lights. Despite only being a band for a short while (circa mid-2007) they have made a bigger splash than most and done it in less time. This energetic three-piece is ready to release their second EP, “Fiction Fever” next month and the fact that this band is signed to my guilty pleasure label Doghouse, just makes it that much sweeter to check it out before hand. Normally I begin my thoughts on a release by thinking carefully and weighing all the sides and options before I talk. This effort on the other hand helps make my job easy, because it has so many things going for it. Based on the components it’s almost a sure thing that this EP will blow people away. Or will it? Maybe it will just be like the rest out there. Are these guys really worth it? read more
