Such Gold – Pedestal EP – Review
Release Date: November 16th, 2010
Record Label: 6131 Records
Genre: Pop-Punk
Somewhere down the line of young pop-punk DIY’ers you’ll find the NY-native five-piece Such Gold. Fans have noticed a maturation as of late; turning their once simple pop-punk into a three headed beast which also includes hardcore and indie influences. Which all tends to make sense when the bands who make your sound what it is happen to be artists like Saves The Day, Hot Water Music, The Progress, and At The Drive-In. Their recent EP “Stand Tall” and faithful touring, has brought the band clout and experience in such a small amount of time; it is interesting to see what type of impact their latest EP, entitled “Pedestal” will have for the band (and their love for extended plays.)
Recently bands such as Four Year Strong and Set Your Goals have become a staple of pop-punk/hardcore bands with melodic guitars, backing anthem-shouts, and thumping basslines. Such Gold is very similar and is sure to stir hardcore listeners with shrill shouts and quick percussion as well as appealing to pop-punk fans with catchy hooks and the soft voice of Ben Kotin. “Pedestal” is a rumbustious few set of tracks; truly punk at heart, with an urgent pace and passionately yelped words of a youthful mindset. Being a tried-and-true lover of melodic punk, it was no surprise that right around the EP’s fifth track “Gut Rot,” which is arguably the efforts catchiest, Such Gold nestles soundly in your ears and decides for you that you will be listening to this EP once more.
Little quarrels that I usually have with lower production efforts and slightly shrilled shouts (which this does have) seemed to have fallen to the way-side with “Pedestal” because of its charmingly melodic and charging pop-punk. Plus you have to love vocals that are backed up 24/7 by anthem shouts; it feels like you are singing along with your pals at a bar to some catchy song the DJ has going. So enjoy Such Gold‘s new EP with friends, preferably ones that enjoy quick punk with a dash of hardcore, and a few drinks. ~Staff
