Oh, Sleeper – Son Of The Morning – Review

Release Date: August 25th, 2009
Record Label: Solid State Records
Genre: Post-Hardcore

Oh, Sleeper, forgive me for my for my procrastination, but this post hardcore unit hailing from Fort Worth, Texas just might be my sleeper pick for album of the year for the genre. Not to lead you on to far, but Oh, Sleeper’s Son of the Morning marks the bands second full length that dropped August 25th on Solid State Records. Ten crunchy tracks spanning just under thirty-four minutes produced by Andreas Magnussson (The Black Dahlia Murder). Diving into Son of the Morning, I will do with pure delight.

Distorted chaotic post-hardcore with raw emotion spews from my speakers and meets my ears with delight. Son of the Morning is a concept detailing the final battle between god and the devil, that my friend is a pretty bad ass concept, even though it has been used before, but Oh, Sleeper puts their spin on it. Not to mention it is more than refreshing to have a post hardcore band stay away from the synth crazy trend that has infected the genre. Son of the Morning alongside The New Breed are chaotic anthems that will get the fists pumping and the stage dives jumping. Reveries of Flight, starts off melodic then breaks out into chaotic chants. Then comes in my favorite and almost pure metal track World Without a Sun is a perfect blend of distortion, low end sound, and growls to show the versatility of Oh, Sleepers.

Son of the Morning holds a perfect blend to appeal to metal fans as well as post hardcore kids if Dillinger Escape Plan meets Underoath in a cohesive melody of pure audible enjoyment for the masses. While Oh, Sleeper’s creates a perfect blend of sound it seems to lack the one stand out track. But then again on an album of ten precisely crafted and executed songs there is not much to complain about.

In the end Son of the Morning is a must have, its an interesting concept with near flawless execution, not bad for a band trying to disprove the “sophomore slump,” curse. Unlike many of their genre counterparts Oh, Sleepers contains a unique blend of distorted guitars and vocals alongside some heavy low end force. The talent within Oh, Sleeper is obvious with Son of the Morning, now if they can only keep things rolling when “junior year,” arrives. All things aside you will really be missing out if you pass on Oh, Sleeper’s Son of the Morning. ~Staff
