Loom – Selva Molhada – Review

Release Date: 2009
Record Label: Exigent Records
Genre: Indie Screamo

After checking out Loom‘s previous release “Clutches,” I truthfully wasn’t too eager to listen to their latest record “Selva Molhada.” It’s not that I dislike them or their music personally, but rather the bands last two records were a little rough around the edges, both musically and production wise. However this Salt Lake City four-piece isn’t satisfied with the bar minimum and has decided to embark on something different with this new album, and second chances maybe in order.

For those without a Portuguese translator, “Selva Molhada” stands for “wet jungle,” which is an apparent theme for musical progression for the band. And let me tell you right now, Loom have jumped by leaps and bounds with this record. Before their was confusion and mucky musicianship, but with “Selva Molhada” they have ushered in a new era for the band. Loom has now centered themselves around being an indie screamo band with an electric violin and manic guitars. I was expecting something slow and I ended up with Dameria guitars, Yellowcard stringwork, as well as teaming scrappy screamo and clean vocals.

The addition of producer Kris Crummett (Dance Gavin Dance, Fear Before the March of Flames,) certainly has had a huge impact in the engineering, production, and evolution of this record, as it becomes apparent that whether we are hearing a charged melodic guitar rush with intricate violin, or a soft serenade with light vocals and classical string work, both are delightful in so many ways. And even when you could discuss the fairly raspy vocals of Mike Cundick, which rubs on your ear drums like sand paper after a while, you won’t because of how collectively wholesome and formulated Loom has made this record.

So whether you are here for the newly discovered Fall Of Troy-esque guitars, beautifully melodic violins, the inspired lyrics, or the generally post-hardcore natured sound, “Selva Molhada” delivers on so many promises that you might not even be aware of. A few small gripes can be completely forgiven when we receive such a wild and majestic release with “Selva Molhada.” ~Staff
