Cannibal Corpse – Evisceration Plague – Review

Release Date: February 3rd, 2009
Record Label: Metal Blade Records
Genre: Death Metal

Have you ever seen a movie that focuses on damnation or apocalypse? And while the world is in shambles and on fire you see something in the background? A big tall black monolith erected as a monument to pain and suffering as well as chaos and destruction. Well in a nut shell that is Cannibal Corpse. They have been around for more than 2 decades, released 11 studio albums, influenced countless imitators, and doing it all while staying as far away from the TV and radio as possible. They have always tried to stay on the trend of having every new album be heavier than the previous. Seeing that the bands last album “Kill” was highly favored in their eyes, their new album “Evisceration Plague” has a high hill to climb in order to comply with this lofty trend.

Similar to bands such as Cattle Decapitation, Cannibal Corpse is known for exceedingly grotesque album covers, but they have toned down their expressionism for their last 2 records leaving the art more subdued. But it is a different story when discussing their music. It is simply as heavy and rough a journey as it always has been. George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher (with the awesome nickname) provides his raspy and devilish shouts and growls that shave and peel the flesh from your ears. Lyrics are as they always have been, “Disheveled bloody excrement” this and “Beheaded fornicating skeletons” that, they really love to say anything and that is what has drawn such a massive cult following to them.

Evisceration Plague” focuses on continuing the traits of previous albums (such as the forceful and quick guitars as well as poundingly brutal breakdowns), all the while searching to make music with increased vigor. Like I previously mentioned, Cannibal Corpse won’t seen a camera lens or radio station DJ’s desk because they are exactly the opposite of what gets played on mindless replaying radio, which is blitzkrieging death metal with lyrics that would shame several Hell’s Angels.

For fans this album is must and if you have a hard on for American death metal then these guys had the hand in forming it so you should probably pick this up either way, but it follows a linear progression of getting heavy and this album is hard, but it doesn’t do that much in the way of being original. But in the end all you really need is a bunch of tracks that can draw and quarter someone without the need for horses and you can have a nice day. ~Staff
