Release Date: March 9th, 2010
Record Label: Nuclear Blast Records
Genre: Death Metal

New York death metal legends Immolation have picked up their axes and assembled yet another onslaught to their already illustrious discography. Their latest effort, entitled Majesty and Decay is set for a March 9th release date and marks their debut on Nuclear Blast Records. Twelve tracks shredding across forty-five minutes; Majesty and Decay only proves that Immolation can still get better with age. After a minute and half intro, the pendulum shifts and the wrecking ball is let loose to wreak havoc with The Purge. Insanely tight sound, devastating drums, guitars balancing out with heavy and melodic riffs, and Ross Dolan’s classic vocal stylings.

The production is perfect, very balanced which is sometimes hard to come by in the genre. Not only is this a compliment to the production, but it also allows the instrumentation of the band to shine. The title track, proves to be devastating with a consistent driving attack. Another thing about Majesty and Decay that separates it that not only are the songs devastating, they capture your attention and never fall into monotony. The Divine Code is by far my favorite track with a faster pace, as it just consistently builds all the way to the end, not to mention the solo is pretty sick.

Honestly, this album just further solidifies Immolation as death metal heavyweights, (as if they had something to prove.) Every track has an element to it that distinguishes it from the others. The only thing I could ask for is one or two tracks that stood above the others for a defining knock out blow. But, can that really be a flaw that every track is as solid as the next? I don’t think I can knock Immolation for assembling one of the best albums so far this year.

This truly is a no brainer for me, solid riffs, complex drums, and deathly growls, I could not ask for more. So, come March 9th be sure to pick up Majesty and Decay and prepare for Immolation to raise the bar ever so slightly once again. Unless intelligent death metal scares you and you enjoy sacrifice musical integrity for a dime of dozen whatever the latest trend is, you would be a fool to pass this album up. ~James Terry
