Release Date: October 2009
Record Label: Six Feet Under Records
Genre: Hardcore
Australian hardcore quintet 50 Lions, are making noise with their latest album Where Life Expires. For those who missed it, myself included dropped last October on Six Feet Under Records, fast forward to now, I got a chance to listen to twelve crunchy tracks spanning twenty-five minutes. Coming out of the gate ferociously, 50 Lions hits you with Redefine. First thing I notice is the amount of balance enough tempo changes however slight they are and bouncing melodies. Clench your fist and start moving your feet, Still Lost has got everything from fast riffs, chants, and thick bass lines. The same dynamic beat down continues throughout Where Life Expires. By far my favorite track on the album is Locrian, bringing the hate with a full out vocal assault. That carries over into Means to An End.
Now, aside from the negative view on Locrian the negatives of Where Life Expires are the short length and tracks not really standing out from one another. I wish this album was just a tad meatier take out the interlude (which serves no real purpose anyways) and Message (only twenty seconds) your left with ten tracks spanning about as long as a lot of ep’s. Where Life Expires is solid album, it just leaves you wanting more. Which is great, but it still leaves a slight sour taste in your mouth.
Perhaps I am being too much of cynic bitching about length of a hardcore album; but I will be damn sure to say this is a great album. 50 Lions sound is one that leaves you satisfied stomping about your living room chanting along. Solid hardcore from down under, I hope the rumors are true and we catch them stateside this summer. Definitely add Where Life Expires to your rotation the album is only five bucks from Six Feet Unders estore. ~James Terry
