San Francisco has created a gem of a female indie pop group in Loquat. Secrets of the Sea is the band’s follow up to their debut record It’s Yours to Keep, and leaves little for you to question. With calm, breezy songs, they show a strong comparison to Imogen Heap, Portishead, and Denali, yet in a style all their own. This is the type of record that says a lot quietly, packed with layers of development.
Since the fall of Denali, I’ve been anxiously looking for someone to replace them in my collection for recent releases. Ambulette did the job while Maura was in that band. Glos does a good job as she continues her music career, but Loquat is a great compliment to that style. Singer Kylee Swenson’s vocals remind me a lot of Maura Davis’ vocals but on a backdrop a little more radio friendly. This is a high praise, believe me.
There are some downer tracks on the album, like “Big Key, Little Door”. It’s not for lack of trying, they’ve put the effort into it, but it just appeared to miss the spark that tracks like “Harder Hit” and “Sit Sideways” had shown earlier on the record. Long story short, if you’re looking for a solid female driven indie pop record that has a lot of flare packed into calm, mellow songs, then Loquat is exactly what you’re looking for. ~Staff
