Fat Music Vol. 7 – Harder, Fatter + Louder – Review
Release Date: November 22nd, 2010
Record Label: Fat Wreck Chords
Genre: Punk
Well isn’t this a fond blast from the punk-filled past. The last time we heard anything from Fat Wreck Chords‘ “Fat Music” compilations it was 2002 when bands like Staind, Korn, and Disturbed were topping the bland music charts. Cringe worthy I know, but eight years later this series of compilations has returned with “Harder, Fatter + Louder,” complete with all the trust-worthy, old-school punk that you know all happen to know and love. read more

The Memorials – The Memorials – Mini Review
Release Date: January 11th, 2011
Record Label: Bloodthirsty Unicorn Records
Genre: Psychedelic/Hard Rock
Holy Wolfmother, Batman. There hasn’t been very many times (ie. at all) that listening to a band will have me reminisce about hearing Will Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith’s soulful nu-metal band, Wicked Wisdom; but here we are. The Memorials is the new project from Thomas Pridgen (ex-The Mars Volta), Viveca Hawkins, and Nick Brewer, and while these three are fully educated and well versed (all three being classmates at Berklee College of Music), I couldn’t help but notice cheap similarities to some of their songs and other bands that are a little short on creativity; this is only true in tracks like “We Go To War,” “Born To Shine,” and “Let’s Party,” where the duller side of rock rears its head. On the other hand though, the rest of their new self-titled record takes a load of inspiration from The Mars Volta. This means a veil of constant psychedelic guitars is prominent. Viveca’s soulful belting and agile voice give the album more depth and sincerity, a key importance when you are channeling 70′s guitar effects and you want to be taken seriously. So what do The Memorials do right? Well Nick’s lone strings are impressive for how psychedelically ebb and flow they are, and Viveca can certainly capture an audience’s attention with her voice; I guess it all starts to turn south when all the soulful groove makes way for songs like “GTFOMF” or as I’m sure you understood “Get the fuck out my face.” That sentence doesn’t even have the correct syntax, and trust me the lyrics aren’t any better. So The Memorials switch from “visionary, girl-lead, The Mars Volta” to “shallow, abbreviating, Wicked Wisdom” and back again. But if you can handle the mood swings and you like soulful rock, then The Memorials‘ new self-titled album might be worth checking out. ~Staff
