The Cliks – Dirty King – Review

Release Date: June 23rd, 2009
Record Label: Tommy Boy Records
Genre: Indie Rock

The Toronto based trio, The Cliks, are an interesting bunch. First and foremost you must realize that while there are two (actual) girls in the band, the lead singer Lucas is not one of them. Now you may be asking me why I said that and the answer is that he looks very much like a manly woman (it could be the eye liner and feminine features). So much so that, like a car crash, you can’t help but stare and wonder “Is he a she?” Either way, the last time I had my ears acquainted with The Cliks, was with their 2007 release “Snakehouse” and now that we have jumped the traditional two year cycle, this threesome is back again with their latest release “Dirty King.” I kept trying to picture the bands motivations in called it that but I couldn’t help picturing a rather large Don King ordering one of his boxers to hit below the belt. Oh Well, only in America, or in this case Canada. read more

Taking Back Sunday – New Again – Review

Release Date: June 2nd, 2009
Record Label: Warner Bros. Records
Genre: Rock

Honestly I haven’t given Taking Back Sunday a true listen since their 2002 release “Tell All Your Friends.” Sure they mushroomed in popularity, gaining mainstream appeal, and released their most successful release with “Louder Now,” but I still kept myself distant. Some of it could be the fact that some of the most arrogant and lucid ass hats were touting them around as the best band around, and don’t think that an overzealous group of idiots can’t ruin the appeal of hearing a band — they can. Since their last release however a major blow was dealt to the moral of both the band and their fans, involving the departure of Fred Mascherino. While his scrawny, bearded, shout-a-thons weren’t always pretty, they helped coalesce Taking Back Sunday‘s developed sound of the time. Now with their aptly titled new record “New Again” upon us, I am interested in seeing if their “new” can possibly stay on the level of previous efforts. read more
